For many of us, a new year is a fresh start, a do-over of sorts; that motivates us to try something new or to re-commit to tasks we may have put on hold throughout the previous year.
When we talk about the new year, one word often comes to mind; resolutions.
With 2020 just around the corner, many of us are beginning to plan out our own resolutions and goals.
Whether it’s deciding to run a marathon, write a book, or start a business, a new decade is nearly here and with it—let’s be honest—perhaps an impending sense of dread at actually accomplishing those goals you’ve set.
Well, as it turns out, you're not alone.
Did you know that only 8% of people actually end up accomplishing their New Year’s Resolutions?!
It can be daunting when your list of New Year Resolutions is as long as your holiday shopping list! In addition to the post-holiday slump, not being able to keep your resolutions by February or even late January may increase your anxiety.
It's a well-known joke that gym memberships surge in January, only to thin back out by mid-February and that pizza and chocolate slowly start to creep back into diets two weeks into the year.
Sometimes, it almost seems like resolutions are just meant to be broken.
At Vitropics we believe that, when established properly, making resolutions can be a great, productive way to set goals and intentions for the new year.
If you want to set yourself up for the best chance of achieving your 2020 goals, we’ve put together a simple guide of our top tips to get you started!
Start With Self- Reflection
Often, what we don't realize is that the problem isn't that we aren't capable of sticking to our resolutions—it's that we need to do a better job making resolutions that are meaningful and align with our personal values.
The first step in setting resolutions that resonate with you is self-reflection.
Start by asking yourself questions such as;
- What has my life been like over the past 12 months?
- What went well that I am grateful for?
- What didn’t go so well or could have gone better?
- How has my life changed over the past 12 months?
Your answers to these questions will help you determine what is important to you and shape your goals for the new year.
Write Them Down
So, now that you know what your goals are, it’s time to pull out that journal that’s been collecting dust and get them down on paper.
It's been shown that people who write down their goals feel a greater sense of accountability and have a much higher chance of accomplishing them.
Having a list of your goals also allows you to track your progress. Checking off completed items will give you that fab sense of accomplishment, motivating you to keep going!
Make Them Public
The more public you make your commitment to your new resolutions, the more likely you are to stick to it.
Sharing our goals holds us accountable making it harder to back out.
Consider allocating an accountability buddy to keep you on track or perhaps start a resolutions blog documenting your journey.
Celebrate Your Successes
If your focus is just on the endgame, it's easy to feel discouraged when progress plateaus around the one-month mark.
Big success is made up of small victories. Create mini-milestones for each of your goals and decide on how you will reward yourself when you reach them.
Remember, having goals is important but life should not pause to pursue them! Have fun with your resolutions and you will be more inclined to stick to them.

In addition to our Vitropics goals, we’ve also been working on setting some resolutions for ourselves!
“My resolution this year is to focus on establishing a better work-life balance. I’d like to read more books, go to my weekly horse riding lesson, make an effort to get out in nature more and make space for regular meditation. When done regularly, these are the things that make me feel my best!”
“2020 is set to be an exciting year for me personally as we prepare to move into our new home! I am also setting my intentions to stay in balance while achieving my 2020 work and life goals. I love my work but I need to make sure not to overdo it and set aside time for things that spark my joy- playtime with my daughter, date nights, painting and yoga!”
